Did you know CSCS has changed the way you apply for your card?

Most people in construction are familiar with Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards. It’s the card that provides proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on site.

Before 2020, you could apply for your CSCS card without the need to send CSCS your training certificate. At the time CSCS and CITB shared a data information system, which would check your qualifications online and issue cards to those who had passed their course and relating touch screen test, usually after around 48 hours of completing their course.

Unfortunately, due to the separation of CITB and CSCS the process has changed. As of now, the only way to apply for a card is to send CSCS a scanned copy of the qualification certificate when applying for the relevant card.

CITB certificates can take 3-4 weeks to be delivered to the operative of the training provider.

How could this negatively affect Operative?

The changes to the system will result in a longer lead time in obtaining the CSCS.

This could mean Managers, Supervisors, Operatives and visitors will be denied access onto site without the required CSCS card.

In some cases, Operative may face a loss of earnings, without the required access onto site in order to carry out their role.

Projects may stall due to missing key personnel on site.

How to Reduce the Risk?

Plan your training and CSCS card application to include the potential delay in receiving your CITB certificate.

Speak to your training or site supervisor/manager, to ensure they are aware of the changes.

Make a note of your expiry dates and set a reminder 8-10 weeks before the end date.

Book your training and make sure you complete the course in good time to apply for the CSCS card.
